In recent months, a concerning trend has been brought to light regarding two popular animal feed brands. Dumor and Producers Pride, and even their parent organizations supply chicken feed to farms across America. Much of the feed supplied by these brands left chickens not producing eggs for a period of several months. This went on from September 2022 to January 2023.
A TikTok influencer and egg farmer decided to investigate the issue further. After switching to a different locally-sourced feed, the chickens started producing eggs again. The influencer had been sourcing her chicken feed from Tractor Supply’s store brand, Producers Pride. This store brand is made by Purina Mills. Why is this important?
Purina Mills is a subsidiary of Land O’Lakes, which produces animal feed and nutrition products for chickens, livestock, pets, and wildlife. Producers Pride (Purina Mills) and Dumor feed, which is under Nutrena, are subsidiaries of Purina. Purina is itself a subsidiary of Nestlé S.A.
The Controversy In Context
The largest egg producer in the US is Cal-Maine Foods. Cal-Maine produces eggs for various brands who also happen to sell chicken feed under different labels, one of them being Land O’Lakes who makes the chicken feed Producers Pride which is under a subsidiary of Purina. Are there any other connections between Purina and Cal-Maine? Yes, yes there is!
The Story Not Told by Media
According to OpenSecrets.org, a donation or donations totally $2,500 were made to Debbie Stabenow, D-Mich by employees or an employee of Cal-Maine. Not a big deal until you look at the fact that Debbie Stabenow serves as the Nestlé Purina PetCare North America President and CEO.
In conclusion, the trend of chickens not producing eggs while being fed these popular feed brands is concerning. It’s also concerning that consumers have been gouged while the largest producers of eggs made such huge gains with no apparent supply issue of their own. Lastly, it’s concerning that money from an employee or employees of Cal-Maine was donated to a political candidate who also happens to be a CEO of Purina, a company who sells chicken feed to farms that could produce no eggs. Further investigation is necessary to understand the root cause of the issue, but if it looks like a chicken and smells like a chicken, we can’t assume anything because it could be a duck these days.
